While I was writing about my own experience learning to use artificial intelligence, I kept coming back to one particular thing.
AI is patient.
AI is nonjudgmental.
There's no awkward look. No impatience. No embarrassment because everybody else in the room apparently understood the first time.
That got me wondering.
Would it be easier for autistic people to communicate and be more creative or productive if they worked with an AI?
And because apparently AI queries and TikTok doom scrolling weren't already consuming enough of my life, down the rabbit hole I went.
It turns out researchers have been asking versions of this question for quite a while—although much of the earlier research wasn't about ChatGPT-style artificial intelligence.
It involved computers, virtual environments and, perhaps most interestingly, social robots.
A 2016 systematic review of autism and social robotics found a number of intriguing patterns. In some of the studies reviewed, autistic participants performed better with robot partners than human partners, displayed substantial social behavior toward robots and showed increases in spontaneous language during robot-assisted sessions.1
That doesn't mean scientists discovered that autistic children would rather hang out with R2-D2 than with us.
But it definitely got my attention.
A larger systematic review and meta-analysis published in 2022 looked at 40 studies involving autistic children and young people. Seventeen were randomized controlled trials. The researchers found that robot-mediated interventions produced a statistically significant improvement in social functioning overall, although the benefits varied and appeared greater among younger children.2
Another experiment involving 24 autistic children compared interactions involving another person, a computer game and a social dinosaur robot.
The children spoke more when the robot was involved than when the interaction partner was another human or a computer game.3
So apparently R2-D2 wasn't such a ridiculous example after all.
One possible explanation researchers have raised repeatedly is:
ONE POSSIBILITY
Predictability.
A systematic review of technology-based interventions for autistic children noted that computer- and robot-based interactions can provide greater predictability and regularity than some human-based interventions.4
And that brings us to the problem with humans.
The unwritten rules of neurotypical communication can be a minefield of miscommunication, anxiety and frustration.
Facial expressions.
Eye contact.
Tone of voice.
Body language.
Sarcasm.
Hints.
Unwritten social rules.
Knowing when you're supposed to talk and when you're supposed to stop talking.
And sometimes we're expected to process all of those things simultaneously while also figuring out what somebody actually means.
For many autistic people, some of those signals can be difficult, exhausting or simply unnecessary obstacles to communication.
Now compare that with a text conversation with an AI.
There's no eye contact requirement.
There's no facial expression to interpret.
You can take as long as you want before responding.
You can ask the same question again.
You can ask for something to be explained more literally.
You can tell it exactly how you want it to communicate with you.
That doesn't make AI better than people.
But it might make the interaction more consistent and predictable.
And who do we know who often values consistency and predictability?
Here's where things get especially interesting.
For years, researchers could study autistic people interacting with relatively simple computer programs or robots.
Now we have artificial intelligence systems capable of carrying on extended conversations, explaining ideas in different ways, adapting their language and responding to very specific instructions about how someone wants to communicate.
And researchers are beginning to study that too.
In 2024, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University conducted a particularly interesting experiment involving 11 autistic adults and workplace communication.
Participants brought real workplace-related social questions to two different chat systems.
One was powered by GPT-4.
The other was secretly being answered by a human being.
The autistic participants didn't know which was which.
And here's the part that made me sit up:
The participants strongly preferred interacting with the large language model.5
Now, before we declare victory for our future robot overlords, there was an important catch.
A professional counselor and job coach who reviewed the interactions raised concerns about some of the advice the AI provided.5
So the study simultaneously demonstrated two things:
Autistic adults may genuinely find something appealing about communicating with an AI.
And AI can still give lousy advice.
Both can be true.
The research has moved even further since then.
A randomized clinical trial involving autistic adolescents and adults between the ages of 11 and 35 tested an LLM-based program called Noora.
Participants practiced responding to conversational statements and received immediate AI-generated feedback.
After four weeks, the group using the AI program showed statistically significant improvements in the targeted empathetic verbal responses compared with a waitlist group.
Even more interestingly, those improvements carried over into conversations with actual people.6
That's important.
The goal wasn't to make people good at talking to a computer.
Researchers were looking to see whether practicing with the computer might help communication elsewhere.
A 2026 study took the same basic idea into an employment setting.
Three autistic young adults participating in a vocational internship used an AI conversational training system to practice emotionally responsive workplace communication.
All three showed improvement after the AI intervention began, including improvement during human-delivered conversation tests, with some gains maintained afterward.7
Three people is obviously nowhere near enough to settle the question.
But we're no longer talking entirely about hypothetical possibilities.
People are actually testing this.
We do not currently have enough evidence to say that autistic people, as a group, communicate better with artificial intelligence than they do with neurotypical people.
That would be a much bigger claim than the research supports.
A lot of the older research involved children.
Many studies were small.
A lot of them involved specially designed therapeutic robots rather than general-purpose artificial intelligence.
And even the newer LLM studies are still relatively small and focused on very specific kinds of communication.
So the scientifically accurate answer to my original question appears to be:
THE SCIENTIFIC ANSWER
Maybe. Sometimes. For some people. Under some circumstances.
Which, now that I think about it, is probably the answer to most questions involving human beings.
This is where my original question gets ahead of the autism research.
Could working with AI make it easier for an autistic person to organize thoughts?
Start a project?
Brainstorm?
Turn an idea into words?
Learn something?
Be more creative?
Be more productive?
We don't yet have strong autism-specific studies answering those questions.
But we do know that generative AI can affect productivity in the general population.
In one randomized experiment involving 453 college-educated professionals performing writing tasks, access to ChatGPT reduced the amount of time people needed by about 40 percent while increasing the quality of their work by about 18 percent.8
Other experimental research has also found that ChatGPT can help people generate more creative ideas under some conditions.9
Those studies were not specifically about autistic people, so I don't think we get to leap from them to saying AI increases autistic productivity or creativity.
But put the two research areas next to each other and an interesting question appears.
If AI can help people perform certain cognitive tasks—and if some autistic people find AI-mediated communication more comfortable or predictable—what happens when those two effects occur in the same person?
As far as I can tell, science is still working on that one.
There's another idea in autism research that makes all of this even more fascinating.
It's called the double empathy problem. It also fits into the broader idea of making room for different ways of thinking and communicating.
Traditionally, difficulties between autistic and non-autistic people have often been described as deficits in autistic social communication.
But what if communication problems aren't entirely located inside one person's brain?
What if they happen partly because two people experience and interpret the world differently?
Research on matched and mixed-neurotype conversations has found that autistic-autistic interactions can show stronger rapport than mixed autistic/non-autistic interactions in some settings.10
More recent group research has found a similar pattern, with autistic adults reporting greater ease and enjoyment in all-autistic groups than in mixed-neurotype groups.11
That doesn't mean autistic people automatically get along with every other autistic person.
Trust me.
Human beings don't work that way.
But it does challenge the idea that social difficulty exists entirely because an autistic person is somehow deficient at communication.
Sometimes two operating systems just don't communicate particularly well with each other.
Which brings us back to artificial intelligence.
What happens when one side of that communication mismatch isn't human at all?
Maybe AI isn't naturally better at communicating with autistic people.
Maybe something else is happening.
Maybe it removes some of the unwritten rules.
You don't have to look interested correctly.
You don't have to maintain the appropriate amount of eye contact.
You don't have to recognize that somebody's tone means they're getting impatient.
You don't have to pretend you understood something because asking again feels embarrassing.
You can simply communicate.
If that's part of what's happening, then the interesting question isn't whether autistic people are better at talking to machines.
The interesting question might be:
THE BIG QUESTION
What barriers did the machine remove that humans accidentally put there?
There are some enormous cautions here.
Autistic people are no more interchangeable with one another than anybody else.
Something one autistic person finds liberating might be completely useless—or downright irritating—to another.
Artificial intelligence shouldn't become an excuse to replace human relationships, teachers, therapists, support workers, families or communities.
And AI itself comes with plenty of problems and unanswered questions.
It can be wrong.
It can misunderstand people.
It can confidently give you completely incorrect information.
There are serious questions involving privacy, bias, misinformation and overreliance on technology.
And remember that workplace study where the autistic participants preferred the AI?
The professional reviewing its advice still had concerns about what the AI was telling them.5
WORTH REMEMBERING
Comfortable doesn't necessarily mean correct.
So no, I'm not suggesting we hand every autistic person a laptop and tell them their new best friend is a chatbot.
But that doesn't mean we should ignore what these interactions might teach us.
Because perhaps the most valuable thing isn't figuring out how to make autistic people communicate more like everyone else.
Maybe AI gives us another opportunity to ask how everyone else could communicate better with autistic people.
We Have to Keep Asking Questions
I started using ChatGPT because I was trying to start a hippie commune.
I certainly wasn't expecting that experience to lead me into questions about autism, communication and whether a machine might accidentally teach us something about the way humans talk to one another.
Yet here we are.
The research is young.
The technology is moving ridiculously fast.
And there are far more questions than answers.
But I keep coming back to the simplest parts of my own experience.
No judgment.
No embarrassment.
Maybe that isn't revolutionary.
But for someone who has spent a lifetime being expected to communicate according to somebody else's rules, I suspect it could feel pretty damn important.
And now I'm curious.
